Loved by gardeners for thousands of years, poppies have provided food, beauty, and medicine since well before the time of Christ. Known for their silky petals, unusual seedpods, and diverse array of shapes and forms, the poppy family has much to offer. While looking at some traditional choices here we will also be looking at some newer introductions, as well as plants that are not true poppies but are closely related to them. This includes the famed blue poppies of the Himalayas and the wonderful California poppies so loved as bedding plants.
