Artist in Training - Secondaries Ages: 8-11

The Aspiring Young Artists Program (AYAP) is committed to providing young artists with the tools to develop their visual art skills.  The program goals are to encourage an interdisciplinary approach to creativity and to create a solid foundation for visual art techniques.  This program also encourages portfolio development in a fun and supportive environment.  Each class will finish with a group art exhibition.  This 22-week course is divided into two terms of 11 weeks each -- from September to December, and from January to April.  The final art exhibition will be held at the end of the course in April.

  • In this class, students develop and strengthen creative skills and self expression while learning the fundamentals of drawing and painting.
  • Children explore a wide range of materials and methods of working including drawing from observation (still lifes), drawing from memory, illustration, abstraction, collage, and portraiture.
  • They are also introduced to the formal elements of drawing and painting such as line, space, perspective, shape, value, texture, colour mixing, and brushwork techniques.
  • They work with a wide range of materials including charcoal, oil pastel, ink, chalk pastels, acrylics, watercolour and collage.
