CME - Current Options for Managing Pain & Addiction

The goal of this course is to provide a forum for skill development for assessment and management of complex pain and/or substance use disorder. Strategies and information will be provided to increase the capacity of health care providers to develop new inter-professional linkages and deliver care in their home communities.

The target audience is healthcare providers, including family physicians, physician specialists, medical residents, nurse practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, physical and occupational therapists, psychologists, dentists, and social workers.

Upon completion of this course the learner will:

  • Better assess and employ the role of various disciplines, series and non-pharmacological therapies for successful, patient-focused, implementation  
  • Explore opportunities for inter-professional collaboration in education and community practice
  • Describe the complexities of managing opioid addiction in the context of chronic pain
  • Describe the use of non-pharmaceutical options for management of pain
  • Determine treatments for alcohol use disorder
  • Describe boundaries for working with patients experiencing addiction   
  • Describe recommendations for pain management in older adults
  • Explain the evidence for the use of cannabis in pain management   
  • Explain the importance of culture in addiction management
