Irrigation Agronomy

This course is restricted to learners who have successfully completed: Overview of Irrigation, Irrigation Systems, Irrigated Cropping Systems and Irrigation Management from the Sustainable Irrigation Program.

Course Description:

Sustainable Irrigation (Irrigation Agronomy) provides opportunity for the learner to develop the practical skills required for farm level management to adjust agronomic packages and practices to optimize benefits of irrigated cropping systems and data driven application of irrigation to ensure water is applied at the right time, in the right place and at the right amount for maximum sustainable yields

Competency – By successfully completing this course, we certify that you can make on-farm decisions critical for success of specifically irrigated cropping systems.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this class, students should be able to:

1. Create an economically viable irrigated cropping system rotation

2. Identify necessary changes to agronomic packages from dry land farming

3. Determine plant available water and allowable depletion

4. Determine when and how much to irrigate

Course Outline:

Learners will utilize the current agronomic and economic calculator and crop variety guides for cropping system planning given a variety of scenarios (case studies) and estimates of soil texture and soil moisture of soil samples with which they will utilize the Saskatchewan Irrigation Scheduling Manual to determine the correct amount to irrigate given different scenarios. The work is done in the classroom. This is reflective of the desk-work and decision making required in modern irrigated agriculture.

At first, the procedures will be described to the class on Friday evening. On Saturday, the procedures will be completed as a class with instructor help to arrive at a reasonable answer. Additionally, a site visit will provide students the opportunity to gain a better understanding of how their desk-work (the skills being developed) connects to and impacts the real world. Sunday morning, learners will be given the opportunity to work through additional scenarios within a group setting. The level of support is dictated by the learners ’needs and feedback is given to improve their answers.

Learners will have demonstrated competency when they are able to arrive at reasonable answers independently during assessment periods Sunday afternoon. Learners are given the opportunity to work through scenarios/case studies multiple times (see tentative weekend schedule) so that they are able to demonstrate competency working through similar scenarios on their own. Assessment is based on the answers supplied and the students ’ability to arrive at these answers independently. In doing so the learners will demonstrate that they are competent to work through the real life scenarios they will encounter in the future.
