Printmaking & Traditional Image Making I

UofS Certificate of Art & Design (USCAD)

Traditional and contemporary image making and printmaking has played an important role in recording and communicating visual portrayals of historical events, cultural reflections, spiritual beliefs, literary stories and scientific knowledge.

Through carved reliefs, friezes, frescoes, illustrations and artwork for newspapers, magazines, books, posters and reproductions of artists works, artists and story tellers have been able to reach out to the masses.

This course explores that history and looks at

  • image-making techniques, processes, materials, basic tools and equipment historically used to create and reproduce images.
  • Processes such as making scratch images, carved reliefs, friezes, rubbings, icon paintings, frescos, wood block and lino/rubber block prints.
  • Prints from scratched/etched metal plates and prints using silk screen processes provide opportunies to relive some of the experiences and challenges of early and contemporary image makers.
  • For details, download the USCAD Calendar.
