Water Management

This course is restricted to learners who have successfully completed: Overview of Irrigation, Irrigation Systems,  Water Management and Drainage and Water Conveyance from the Sustainable Irrigation Program.

Course Description:

Sustainable Irrigation (Water Management) provides opportunity for the learner to develop the practical design skills required for calculating water conveyance requirements in supply and drainage projects, system analysis to identify opportunities to improve water use efficiency and supply management, and wholistic water management for sustainable integrated irrigation and drainage.

Competency – By successfully completing this course, we certify that you can apply water management strategies for sustainable water supply and return flows and determine irrigation, supply and drainage system capacities using physical relationships.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this class, students should be able to:

1. Develop a drainage plan

2. Identify opportunities to improve water use efficiency and supply management

3. Calculate outflow volumes and ditch capacity

4. Determine required flow rates and pump sizes

5. Determine conveyance demand and capacities

Course Outline:

Learners will (1) analyze a parcel of land for drainage requirements, systems, locations and adequate outlet, (2) make recommendations for improvements for real and/or hypothetical water distribution and/or drainage systems, and (3) given a proposed system, make the necessary calculations to ensure water supply will be adequate for meeting crop demand. This is reflective of the desk-work and decision making required in modern irrigated agriculture.

At first, the procedures will be described to the class on Friday evening. On Saturday, the procedures will be completed as a class with instructor help to arrive at a reasonable answer. Additionally, a site visit will provide students the opportunity to gain a better understanding of how their desk-work (the skills being developed) connects to and impacts the real world. Sunday morning, learners will be given the opportunity to work through additional scenarios within a group setting. The level of support is dictated by the learners ’needs and feedback is given to improve their answers.

Learners will have demonstrated competency when they are able to arrive at reasonable answers independently during assessment periods Sunday afternoon. Learners are given the opportunity to work through scenarios/case studies multiple times (see tentative weekend schedule) so that they are able to demonstrate competency working through similar scenarios on their own. Assessment is based on the answers supplied and the students ’ability to arrive at these answers independently. In doing so the learners will demonstrate that they are competent to work through the real life scenarios they will encounter in the future.
